Aviad Moreno is a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the Ben-Gurion Research Institute at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He also heads the Communities and Mobilities Research Hub at the Azrieli Center for Israel Studies. He previously held fellowships at the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, and Tel Aviv University.
The author and co-editor of several books and dozens of articles, Moreno’s recent monograph, Entwined Homelands, Empowered Diasporas: Hispanic Moroccan Jews and Their Globalizing Community (Indiana University Press, 2024), received both the National Jewish Book Award and the Latin American Jewish Studies Association (LAJSA) Book Award. His additional academic honors include the Ben Halpern award, the Alon Fellowship, the Gad Barzilai Award, and the Distinguished Early Career Award from the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry.
In addition, Moreno serves on the content committee of the ANU Museum of the Jewish People, the board of the National Academy for the Ladino Language and Culture, and is an international member of the Spanish Royal Academy. He also co-chairs the Sephardi/Mizrahi Caucus at the Association for Jewish Studies (AJS).
During his sabbatical at the University of Florida, his current project—developed in collaboration with Professor Raanan Rein and titled Interconnected Jewish Histories Across the Americas—examines transnational ties among Jewish communities, with particular attention to Sephardi–Ashkenazi relations and the diversification of the Israeli diaspora.
