Student Spotlight: Reese Whitely (Class of 2028)

Please introduce yourself. 

My name is Reese Whitely and I’m from Cleveland, OH. I’m a PhD student in History, graduating in 2028.

How did you get involved with the Shorstein Center?

I applied for the history department’s Ph.D. program to work with Dr. Goda, who was the department chair of the Shorstein Center at the time.

What is something you are proud of?

I am proud of passing my comprehensive exams and prospectus defense- I am finally ABD (all but dissertation)!

Is there a specific class or professor that stands out as especially formative?

Working with Dr. Goda has certainly been an important part of my education here. I took an independent study with him my first year on the Cold War and have worked closely with him since. Also, working with Dr. Aleksiun through being her TA for the History of the Holocaust course was especially formative for me. Both professors are so skilled and knowledgeable!

What has been your favorite Jewish Studies class or topic and why?

The history of the Holocaust class stands out to me as it is something I hope to teach throughout my career.

How is the Shorstein Center preparing you for the professional world?

The Shorstein Center prepares me in many ways; through classes, lectures and events, funding opportunities to complete my dissertation research, and giving me a supportive space to work on my writing.

Looking back, how did your Shorstein Center experience shape your perspective on global issues, culture, or leadership?

Through all of the lectures and guest speakers, the Center has shaped how I see Jewish history in a global context- especially Dr. Raanan Rein’s work on Jews in the Spanish speaking world!

What advice would you give prospective UF students who are considering Shorstein Center courses or involvement?

I highly recommend attending lectures and meeting the guest speakers- you never know who you might connect with!

What is your favorite Jewish-related book?

My favorite Jewish-related book is East West Street by Philippe Sands.
